Jamaica claimed their second victory of the NCB Sunshine
Savers Tri-Nation Netball Series last evening by stopping South
Africa, 53-38, in Game Two at the National Indoor Sports Center.
The first quarter was
slow-paced and uninspired as the Jamaicans led 14-7. They
struggled with unforced errors, underlined by a poor pass to
captain Simone Forbes by centre Tracey-Ann Robinson. The South
Africans were content to let the ball come to them and not rush
to get it into the goal circle. The Jamaicans, playing a faster
game, suffered a few mistimed passes, several of which ended off
court. Romelda Aiken scored 38 goals from 43 attempts, while
Forbes landed 15 from 17. Showing signs of assertiveness, Aiken
on a rare occasion left her goal circle to intercept a pass and
sent South African goalkeeper Nontle Gwavu crashing to the court
as the Jamaicans led 28-13 at half-time.
The visitors seemed to find
a second wind midway the quarter and scored six unanswered goals
after the home side led 36-18. The South Africans had added 14
to their score by the end of the quarter, 27-40. The visitors
continued their surge at the start of the final quarter, but the
Sunshine Girls stepped up the pace and pulled away to a
comfortable victory in the end. Coach Connie Francis said she
was still dissatisfied with the poor ball-handling displayed by
the team. "We're still struggling with keeping the ball in our
possession," she said.
South African coach, Carin
Strauss, while not happy in defeat, took comfort in the fact
that her team lost the game by a smaller margin against the
Sunshine Girls than Trinidad & Tobago, who lost 59-30 on Monday.
South Africa and T&T will meet in the third game of the series
this evening, with the winners facing Jamaica in the final
tomorrow.
