The order was made during a hearing of a habeas corpus application that was filed in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court. Luciano has been in custody since Wednesday, March 25th following a police shoot-out with a wanted man. The two-hour shoot out took place at Luciano’s Westminster Crescent home and studio in St Andrew, but he was not there at the time. Investigators are intensifying their probe to determine if there is a link between Luciano and the gunman, Andrew Senior. Senior was wanted in connection with at least eight murders. COMMUNITY AGREES DANCEHALL IS A TROUBLED GENRE BUT SPLITS ON MUSIC BAN

Brooklyn, N.Y., March 11th …On Wednesday, March 4th the Coalition to Preserve Reggae music (CPR) in association with ZYNC TV NEW YORK LINKS hosted the highly anticipated community forum and panel discussion titled, “Could Dancehall be the ruination of Reggae and by extension the Jamaica brand?” The hot button debate was witnessed by about 200 who turned out to the historic Billie Holiday Theatre at Restoration Plaza in Brooklyn. Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Genevieve Brown-Metzger brought greetings to the community stating that she personally welcomed the recent initiatives by the Government through its regulatory agency, the Broadcasting Commission; in saying enough is enough to those artistes, producers and mass media houses that have collaborated to bring the music and our popular culture into disrepute. The impressive selection of panelists included Cristy Barber, VP of Marketing at VP Records, Jon “FX” Crawford , music producer, Ed Robinson, reggae singer and producer, Sheron Hamilton-Pearson, president of People of Black Heritage, a community based organization, Anthony Turner, journalist and publicist and Carter Van Pelt, host of Columbia University’s WKCR 89.9FM’s Eastern Standard Time. They along with the audience agreed that dancehall is only one of the major ills affecting Jamaican youths, citing lack of employment opportunities, poor education and social dislocation as other ills threatening Jamaica’s youth. It was made clear that the Jamaican government has the responsibility to address the social, economic and educational deficiencies but panelists disagreed about the role of banning. CPR achieved its mission of gathering information which will inform its advocacy aimed at raising the bar in the production and performance of Jamaican music. According to Carlyle McKetty, co-founder of CPR, “CPR will continue its efforts to gather information regarding the state of the music and develop and implement strategies to effect it advancement.” Another forum is being planned for the Bronx in April. Stay tuned.

Virginia Dancehall Fraternity Celebrate The Life Of 'General Skele'
Written by Lady Cham - On the night of Saturday, March 14th West Indian Times and Caribbean Connection radio hosts Lady Cham and Ras Imeka were present at Tri-Som Cherry Lounge in Virginia Beach to support and celebrate the life of Nicholas 'Skele' Hopwood who was senselessly murdered early Sunday morning March 8th, 2009. It was a cold, rainy night but there was a huge turnout with hundreds of people showing their love for 'General Skele'. In attendance were artists, sound men, radio dj's, dancers, military friends, business owners and general dancehall lovers, all showing their love and support. It was a bittersweet night with most people having heavy hearts but wanting to dance a last dance for Skele and enjoy the dance as he always did. Slam DVD was in attendance to preserve the night on film and they captured the patrons as they celebrated the life of 'Skele' in fine style. Bounty Lion of King Eternity Sound shared with West Indian Times that they will be putting together a memorial cd to help the family and www.nattygarments.com provided remembrance T-Shirts for the occasion. Artists like Sleepy Wonder, Bobo General, Futuristic & Bugg-z all of whom had contact with artist 'Skele' attended and loved the vibes but you could sense their frustration with the entire situation and that huge question 'WHY?' lingered the entire night. West Indian Times took particular note of the type of music that was being played at the memorial dance and we were impressed with the selections and juggling style of the dj's. They played all genres of music including hype dancehall, however, not one of the dj's played a song that was derogatory to women or talked about senselessly murdering people and praising the gun. The dance floor stayed packed despite the lack of negative music which goes to show that it is not necessary in the dancehall arena.
As a community we need to love and cherish life not take each others lives over absolutely nothing. Nicholas was a son, a father, a brother, a cousin and a friend, now he is gone, taken too soon but we pray that lives and attitudes are changed for the better through this tragedy.
To the VA community, Skele's family wishes to thank you all for your outpouring of love and support.
Rest in perfect peace Skele.

Island
Records Turns 50
ISLAND RECORDS, the powerful independent company founded in Kingston in 1959, marks its 50th anniversary this year. A statement from founder Chris Blackwell says a week-long celebration scheduled for England in May will mark the occasion. Blackwell will oversee the event, titled 'Island 50 Live', at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. Activities include live music, movies produced by Island as well as an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia. "It has been an honor and a privilege to work with some of the greatest musical artistes of all time," said Blackwell in a statement. "It was always my intention at Island to make records that stood the test of time, and I'm proud that Island is still a potent force in music 50 years since that first release." Some of Island's classic albums are to be reissued this year; there will also be a series of compilations and box sets. Son of an Irish father and Jamaican mother of Portuguese/Jewish heritage, the London-born Blackwell started Island at Odeon Avenue but moved operations to London in the early 1960s when Jamaican popular music was taking off through ska. Island distributed early Jamaican hits such as Millie Small's My Boy Lollipop throughout Britain during the 1960s. One of the company's first major signings was the British pop group, the Spencer Davis Group, which included a young Steve Winwood. Blackwell and Island hit it big during the 1970s when it established itself as the record industry's biggest 'indie' company. Among its acts were Cat Stevens, Traffic, Bob Marley, Third World, Burning Spear and Steel Pulse. In the 1980s, the company stepped it up a notch by signing an Irish band named U2. It distributed some of the group's biggest albums, including 1986's multi-platinum seller, The Joshua Tree. Blackwell sold Island to the major Polygram company in 1989. The label's catalogue is currently distributed by the Universal Music Group. Catch A Fire, Burnin' and Natty Dread were Bob Marley and the Wailers' first three Island albums. Blackwell kept faith in the group, although the first two were not big sellers. In 1975, Island unleashed a new singer called Burning Spear. It distributed his groundbreaking Marcus Garvey and Garvey's Ghost albums. Third World were signed to Island in 1975. The group's breakthrough album, 1978's Journey to Addis, contained the dance hit, Now That We Found Love. Grace Jones' Nightclubbing album, produced by Sly and Robbie, was released in 1981. It spawned the hit song, Pull Up To The Bumper. All She Wrote, the gold seller (500,000 units) by Chaka Demus and Pliers was Island's last big reggae seller. It was released on the company's Mango label. Blackwell launched the Island Jamaica subsidiary in 1994. It released albums by Beenie Man (Blessed), Luciano (Where There is Life) and Spanner Banner (Chill)

birth to her firstborn
at the Mount Hope
Maternity Hospital via
caesarean section.
Husband and three-time
International Power Soca
Monarch Ian "Bunji
Garlin" Alvarez missed
the greatest show of his
wife's life, only
managing to arrive at
her bedside later in the
evening from Tobago
where he had gone to
fulfill contractual
obligations. In the days
leading up to the birth,
both parents had said
they did not know the
gender of the baby. But
there was some
indication when, during
Lyons-Alvarez's winning
performances at the Soca
Monarch finals last
weekend, she placed the
microphone to her belly,
and a digitally-created
voice of a baby was
heard chanting that
(she, the baby) and her
mommy were putting a
lyrical beating on Bunji.
Lyons-Alvarez was
admitted to the hospital
on Friday, suffering
from pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia
usually results in the
swelling of the feet,
hands and the face. Ten
per cent of women
experiencing their first
pregnancy may develop
this condition, and
studies have indicated
that this is often very
dangerous for mother and
child, but especially so
for the mother.
Fay-Ann's manager, Ian
Pantin, has stated that
both mother and child
were doing just fine.
Security was tight at
the hospital, with
guards assigned at all
entrance-ways to the
ward, as well as to the
door to Lyons-Alvarez's
private room. Only
family were allowed
entry.
Lyons-Alvarez performed
throughout the Carnival
season, stopping only
last weekend after
winning the Groovy and
Power Soca Monarch
titles and the bmobile
People's Choice, and
then picking up the Road
March title over the two
days of Carnival.
Daughter of the
legendary soca icon
Austin "SuperBlue",
Lyons-Alvarez won the
