Michael 'Mikey Dred' Campbell is no stranger to West Indian Times news magazine and the Caribbean Connection radio show.  We have published features, talked over the phone numerous times and generally kept abreast of Mikey's career as he continues to keep the roots & culture of reggae music alive.  So when BSL and INI Promotions brought the 'Door To Door' tour to Virginia it was a must that West Indian Times be there to take in the phenomenal performance of Mikey Dred!

Mikey and his band rolled into town at 2pm and headed straight to the Caribbean Connection radio show where he was on air with Lady Cham and Princess Ann for quite a while and he was extremely humorous expressing his opinion about the lyrical content of today's reggae music and  also his views on men who dance with their women's back to their faces instead of dancing face to face like REAL men used to back in the day!!  Listeners were surprised to hear of Mikey's accomplishments which include producing a UK chart hit for punk rock band The Clash, he also worked on JBC radio in Jamaica in the 70's and produced music for reggae artists  such as Sugar Minott, Junior Murvin, Earl Sixteen, Wally Bucker, Sunshine, Jah Grundy and Rod Taylor.  We also discussed his jingles which are used by many, he created the very well known and much used: "Oh my gosh, the music just turns me on" and he created the slogan 'VP Records, Miles Ahead In Reggae Music' and many many others.  Mikey is extremely intelligent and loves to promote positive and uplifting reggae music.

Once again, the only let down at the actual show was that there were not many black reggae fans who showed up to witness Mikey Dred in action.  It is highly disturbing that our roots and cultural fans will not support these shows, then they wonder why the majority of the shows brought to VA are the hype dancehall shows: well those fans turn out for their artists.

The fans who turned out for the show in Newport News were rewarded with the best of Mikey Dred, he had them screaming, swinging dred locks and doing some of the best skanking moves I have seen since the 1970's!  Mikey Dred took us back in time with tracks like SWALK, Barber Saloon - Haircut, Break Down The Walls, Rasta In Control, Positive Reality and more!  Mikey and his band performed as though they were in Central Park in front of thousands of fans, we hope he returns to VA soon.  Nuff Respect.
